Challenge
After nine years of work, the world’s longest sea-crossing bridge is nearing completion.
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge connects the islands of Hong Kong and Macao with the city of Zhuhai on the Chinese mainland. The 30km bridge will dramatically reduce driving time from Hong Kong to Zhuhai and Macao from about 4½ hours to just 40 minutes.
It’s a highly demanding construction environment, with frequent typhoons, airport height restrictions and shipping navigation to contend with. The cost of the bridge is estimated to exceed 115.9 billion yuan (€14.7 billion).
Result
Products from Thorn light the two artificial islands at the east and west of the crossing, and the tunnel that leads to the bridge from Hong Kong.
We were one of just three suppliers in the final bidding round to light the artificial islands, winning thanks to our ability to meet the extremely tough requirements. We provided 120 Champion Pro LED 132 high-power floodlights, mounted on 12 high masts.
The Champion Pro LED fittings were chosen for their high efficacy of 115lm/W, long lifetime of 70,000 hours (L80), IP66 rating for ingress protection, and success in passing a 1000-hour salt-spray test.
We secured the tunnel lighting contract using 6000 of Thorn’s GTLED Entry and GT58 luminaires with DALI drivers to light a one-kilometre tunnel. These dedicated tunnel luminaires provide excellent lighting performance with high uniformity and long life.
From our client Mr. Guo Wei, equipment manager of CCCC First Harbor Engineering Co., Ltd.said: “It was vital that we find the right partner to work with us on this large-scale and prestigious project. We had stringent technical demands and a challenging environment to deal with, and we needed a supplier who could support us and work closely with us. Zumtobel Group and Thorn have done a great job.”
Mr. Keith Ha, Product Manager of China State Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Limited said: “We were delighted to work with Zumtobel Group and Thorn on the lighting for this major tunnel. They have fulfilled a challenging lighting brief and provided us with great products and great service. The results speak for themselves.”
