  • Lamp efficacy

    Lamp efficacy

Ensuring the lamp efficiently converts electricity into light (lm/W).

  • Ballast classification

    Ballast classification

Controlling the electricity supply to the lamp (Energy Efficiency Index).

  • Luminaire distribution

    Luminaire distribution

Controlling light emission using optics which bend and shape the light to the correct location.

  • System efficacy

    System efficacy

Use of a light source with good efficacy combined with quality electronics and careful thermal and optical control ensure maximum useful light is produced for minimum input power.(luminaire lm/W).

  • Presence/absence detection

    Presence/absence detection

Presence: Lights automatically turn on/off with movement. Absence: Lights automatically turn off and must be manually switched on.

  • Daylight detection

    Daylight detection

Artificial lighting which responds to the natural light conditions.

  • Constant illuminance

    Constant illuminance

A function designed to produce correct light levels for the duration of the maintenance period.

  • Task-scene setting

    Task-scene setting

Allowing the user to set scenes and adapt the lighting to different tasks.

  • Timed off

    Timed off

Automatic cut-off can be installed to turn all lights off during unoccupied hours.

  • Task lighting

    Task lighting

Lighting task areas with the correct amount of light.

  • Zoning of lighting

    Zoning of lighting

Lighting is zoned according to area use.

  • Maintenance schedule

    Maintenance schedule

Maintenance must be performed in response to product age, performance and environment.

  • Waste light

    Waste light

Tight control of emitted light, both from the use of precision optics and also from careful aiming of luminaires, ensures waste light is minimised and energy is used to produce useful light.

  • Reflectance

    Reflectance

Light painted surfaces on the terrace minimise losses in reflected light allowing the use of fewer luminaires while providing good ambient light levels.

  • Visible smart metering

    Visible smart metering

Results of actions can be quickly seen as increased or decreased energy use to encourage responsible energy consumption.

White luminaires create a nautical ambience at Marina del Gargano

Located in the Gulf of Manfredonia, Italy, Marina del Gargano is a new luxury marina in the Adriatic. It offers 700 berths for yachts ranging from 8-60m, as well as a number of on-site facilities and services. The marina is a fantastic investment for the Puglia region, which is renowned for its sun-drenched landscapes and fine food, as well as for having some of Italy's most beautiful coastline.

New customer and holder of the land grant for the marina’s construction, Gespo Ltd, approached Thorn following a recommendation from architect and independent specifier for the marina, Sergio Delli Carri. Gespo’s requirement was for a comprehensive lighting scheme encompassing products of a high technical and functional quality. A competent team capable of managing such an ambitious project was also required.

The project was given three key objectives:

  1. To provide high quality lighting offering a comfortable environment for Marina del Gargano’s visitors.
  2. To provide durable luminaires suitable for the corrosive water front location.
  3. To do so within a contemporary and functional design.

Lello Danese, a Thorn Lighting agent, explains: “Thorn’s Promenade luminaire with white “marine” paint was the obvious choice for the marina front. This elegant circular bollard and parapet luminaire looks similar to a lighthouse and is compatible with various lamp types.

“For the marina’s bright white wavy rooftop terrace, Thorn’s compact, rectangular QBA floodlight was ideal. It provides a clean, crisp white light while the luminaire’s small size ensures it blends into the architecture. Like Promenade, QBA has a robust, durable powder coated aluminium body."

Sergio Delli Carri says: “The project has been developed with the support of Thorn. Thorn’s experience has had a very positive impact on the project because the team immediately understood our specific aesthetical and functional requirements. It was important that the architecture and lighting was completely integrated.”

Aside from achieving excellent integration between the architecture and lighting, one of the key successes of this project is the consideration for the very different lighting needs of the marina and the retail area. As a result, there is no interference between the two areas.
