Thorn revitalises the landscape at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre with outdoor lighting
The award-winning Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) is the largest exhibition venue in the Middle East. Located in the UAE’s capital city, it was opened in 2007 by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. With 73,000 sqm of indoor event space, ADNEC has a diverse yearly calendar, accommodating nearly two million visitors every year.
Landscape architecture firm, Shankland Cox, was recently commissioned to update ADNEC’s landscape to improve the space in terms of usability, appearance and security. As a returning customer, Shankland Cox once again approached Thorn for support to design a lighting scheme.
As well as providing functional outdoor lighting, the installation needed to work aesthetically with the exhibition centre's unique structure and façade. The key aims were to provide ADNEC with improved lighting quality and increased light levels with the best uniformity.
Improving aesthetics and light quality
With high importance attached to the aesthetics of the installation, Thorn suggested aligning the lighting columns with the height of
the architectural building. As well as achieving better coordination between the colomns and the building, the arrangement would avoid
potential conflicts associated with large exhibition items, machinery or vehicles. The architects agreed this would be a better solution than the previous column installation, which was much lower.
The exhibition centre's 5,000 sqm landscape is now illuminated to the specified 20 lux with two-part lighting columns. Each column carries Thorn's Champion 1KW floodlight and 12 unique 18m conical leaning and curved poles. The columns are also supplied with two banner arms to support a 5x1m triangular banner, as well as being pre-drilled to support loudspeakers and wireless network devices.
Thorn also supplied several other outdoor luminaires for the new landscaping scheme, including: D-CO LED, Corniche, MICA, Oracle, E/Fact, Via, Band plus Chalice was used for the security guards office.
